The Alzcom Calendar app was created by Alzheimer's caregivers to help dementia sufferers and their caregivers improve their lives. It is meant to be installed on an Android tablet that is always powered on. It displays the current Day, Date and Time in large, high contrast characters. The app can use your local Android calendar or the Alzcom.com reminders. When a reminder is due it displays an alert screen and plays the first few bars of Fur Elise or your notification sound at a one minute interval.
When used with the local calendar the Alzcom Calendar reads the selected Android calendar and presents the calendar events. The header with date and time remains stationary while the reminders can be scrolled. When the local calendar is linked to an external calendar (Gmail etc.) it can be updated remotely, provided an internet connection is available on the device. If internet is not available, a local calendar app can be used to enter the reminders.
The local calendar can display reminder events from yesterday, today or tomorrow, selected by buttons on the screen. It will always return to today with the next event at the top. There are several themes available, some colorful and some high contrast. It can also link to your Flickr.com photo stream to show up to 20 photos in a slide show when idle. This app will also hide both top and bottom toolbars on the device and prevent the device from sleeping. The reminder screen can be dimmed or darkened between hours that you select.
Options for local Calendar available through simple configuration screens are:
• Require PIN to go to Settings: - Prevents accidentally leaving the reminder screen. Default is ‘0000’.
• Auto start the app at device power on: - Makes an easy restart for remote caregivers.
• Monitor network connection: - Displays a message if the network connection fails or returns.
• Auto OK: - Will acknowledge and stop the current alert after 5 minutes.
• Visual Alert: - Dims and brightens the Alert screen. For those with diminished hearing or quiet areas.
• Show reminder end times: - Put end time as well as start time on the Reminder screen.
• Screen Saver: - Dims the reminder screen when no alert is imminent. Provides background for slide show.
